Even though Oxford was on a more direct route south to New Orleans, the railroad eventually chose a less expensive route to the west of Oxford in mostly flat land near the Mississippi River. Oxford dropped from close to thirty trains a day to only two scheduled in each direction. Finally passenger service to Oxford was dropped altogether. Freight trains dimished and eventually the rights of way through Oxford were converted to a great system of hiking trails.
